WHOSE CAT IS THIS?

The cat paintings featured in Chris Marker’s new documentary, The Case of the Grinning Cat, are the creation of the Paris art collective known as CHAT (La Communauté Harmonieuse des Artistes Taciturnes, or The Harmonious Community of Taciturn Artists). After its first mysterious appearances on the walls of buildings, the Metro and other public surfaces in Paris in November 2001, the charming yellow feline has since appeared in other European capitals, including London, Vienna, Zurich, Amsterdam and Sarajevo. And now, in April 2006, “Mr. Cat” has finally arrived in New York City.

This graphic blend of painting and humor has today asserted itself as an independent and inescapable figure in the European post-graffiti art scene. Both employing and ironically misappropriating the weapons of consumer society, the yellow cat has become the subject of a communication campaign that has manifested itself in stickers, placards, banners, posters, T-shirts, and other paraphernalia. This distinctive image quickly grafted itself onto French national consciousness and received national media attention, being covered by French television—including TF1, France2, France3, and Arte—as well as the press, including Nova, Le Parisien, Libération, Les Inrockuptibles, Les Cahiers du cinéma, L’Express, Le Monde, Télérama, and L’Humanité, among others.

This poetic social phenomenon has now been celebrated in Chris Marker’s documentary, The Case of the Grinning Cat (Chats Perchés), whose December 2004 premiere in Paris was marked by the appearance, on the courtyard before the Pompidou Center, of a cat painting measuring more than 80’ x 160’, the biggest cat in the world, an image that was featured on the cover of a special Cat issue of the daily newspaper Libération and printed as a postcard.

The Case of the Grinning Cat receives its U.S. Premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival (with screenings scheduled for April 30th, May 1st and 2nd), and will open theatrically in New York and around the U.S. this fall.
